Accept your shyness

Learn the Art of Acceptance

Acceptance is the only way out of hell. - Marsha Linehan

This is our favorite chapter in Painfully Shy. Christy's story is true, although we've changed her name and some identifying details. We chose this chapter to share with you for several reasons:

  • We believe that accepting ourselves-shyness and all-is a necessary first step in the process of overcoming social anxiety.
  • Incorporating the concept of "acceptance" into a cognitive-behavioral approach to overcoming social anxiety is somewhat unique. We hope this chapter will offer you a different and useful perspective.
  • Christy's story-one of literally losing and then finding her voice-is truly inspiring. It was a privilege to work with her.
